Abstract

The lack of connection between local culture and mathematics education is a crucial issue in creating contextual learning. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) statue, a monumental Balinese cultural symbol, contains mathematical elements that have not been widely utilized in education, particularly from an ethnomathematics perspective. This study aims to identify and examine the geometric and symmetrical elements contained in the structure of the GWK statue, and to explain their relationship to cultural values and mathematical concepts. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through direct observation, documentation, and literature review. The analysis results show that the statue's structure contains geometric shapes such as rectangles, cylinders, triangles, and circles, and displays symmetrical patterns such as line and reflective symmetry that are arranged aesthetically. These findings suggest that traditional cultural buildings can be used as contextual and engaging mathematics learning media. In conclusion, the incorporation of ethnomathematics concepts in learning can foster cultural appreciation while improving students' understanding of mathematics. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers explore local cultural objects more as teaching materials to connect mathematics with students' real lives.
