Etnomatematika Tari Kecak: Pola, Irama, dan Simetri dalam Cerita Garuda Wisnu Kencana

Abstract

This study aims to explore ethnomathematics in Balinese dance, focusing on the Kecak dance performance in the Garuda Wisnu Kencana story. The aspects explored include floor patterns, rhythm, and symmetry in the dancers’ movements and formations. Ethnomathematics is understood as a study that connects mathematics with culture, allowing traditional arts to serve as a medium for contextualizing and discovering mathematical concepts. The method employed in this research is literature review and exploration, by examining relevant studies and identifying mathematical elements found in the floor patterns, rhythm, and symmetrical movements of the Kecak dance. The findings indicate that the Kecak dance contains mathematical concepts such as circular floor patterns and specific configurations, the repetitive vocal rhythm of “cak” which reflects numerical regularity and recurring sequences, and symmetrical group movements representing reflection and rotation. These aspects create an aesthetic harmony that strengthens the storytelling of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana narrative. The study concludes that the Kecak dance, beyond its artistic and cultural values, is also rich in mathematical elements that can be used as a contextual learning source in mathematics education
