Abstract
Speaking is a form of language that is used by children as verbal symbols in communicating to
convey ideas and feelings or emotions that children feel. Apart from communicating with verbal
symbols, children will usually also communicate using non-verbal symbols such as gestures or
movement expressions. use body language. Children's speaking abilities vary greatly, there are
children who develop their speaking abilities more quickly and there are also children who speak
slowly. Children who can produce speech sounds appropriate to their age are said to have good
speaking skills. On the other hand, if a child has difficulty producing sounds and the quality of his
speech is lower than that of children of the same age, it can be assumed that the child is experiencing
delays in language development. Speech and language skills are related to children's cognitive,
sensorimotor, psychological, emotional and environmental development. Language abilities in
general can be divided into receptive abilities (listening and understanding) and expressive abilities
(speaking). Speaking ability can be assessed more than other abilities, so discussions about
language ability tend to involve speaking ability. This research aims: To determine the assessment
of language development in children. This research used qualitative methods involving 2 children
with slow language development. The results of this research show that children's language
development is lacking, where at the age of 5 years children should be able to speak fluently. This
is proven by interview observations with class teachers and parents.
