Abstract

Mathematical understanding ability is a fundamental competence that students are expected to acquire in learning mathematics. This study aims to describe students’ mathematical understanding ability on the topic of three-dimensional geometry, particularly polyhedra, within the context of learning assessment. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with six eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 12 Pekanbaru as participants, consisting of two students in the high-ability group, two in the medium-ability group, and two in the low-ability group. The research instrument was an essay test that had been validated by experts to ensure its alignment with the indicators of mathematical understanding, namely: (1) restating previously learned concepts, (2) applying and selecting appropriate procedures to solve problems, and (3) connecting various concepts both within and beyond mathematics. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with the validity of findings confirmed through triangulation techniques. The results revealed that high-ability students demonstrated mastery of almost all indicators, medium-ability students were consistent in the first and second indicators but struggled with the third, while low-ability students only achieved part of the first indicator. These findings highlight the importance of designing learning assessments that not only measure procedural skills but also evaluate conceptual connections as a deeper form of mathematical understanding.
