Abstract

Mathematical understanding is important for every student to have because it is a basic ability that will support students to master other mathematical comprehension abilities. One of the factors that affect the ability to understand mathematics is the teaching materials used in learning. The limited teaching materials in learning will affect students' mathematical understanding. The teaching materials used must also be in accordance with the needs of the students. Therefore, researchers try to develop ethnomathematics-based teaching materials in an effort to improve students' mathematical comprehension abilities. This study aims to develop valid and effective ethnomathematics-based teaching materials to improve the mathematical understanding ability of statistical material for class VIII students of Madrasah Wustho Karangsuci. The research method used in this study is research and development (RnD) with quasi-experiments and ADDIE development models. The results of this study show that ethnomathematics-based teaching materials are valid and suitable for use in learning. As the results of the validation of teaching materials with a score of 77.50% (valid), material experts with a score of 90.91% (very valid), limited group tests with a score of 90.12% (very interesting), and broad group tests with a score of 89.77% (very interesting). Then, ethnomathematics-based teaching materials on statistics were declared effective in improving the mathematical comprehension ability of class VIII students of Madrasah Wustho Karangsuci, Banyumas Regency with an N-Gain score of 0.52 experimental class with a moderate category where the score was higher than the control class of 0.28 with a low category.
