CHARACTER EDUCATION IN ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES OF OVERPOPULATION WITH WISDOM

Abstract

Character education within Islamic Religious Education (PAI) represents a meaningful response to the increasingly complex challenge of overpopulation in the modern era. This study employs a qualitative approach based on library research, drawing on primary and secondary sources, including classical Islamic texts, educational literature, and demographic reports, which are analyzed critically and systematically. The findings reveal that core Islamic character values qana'ah (contentment), amanah (responsibility), tawazun (balance), and hikmah (wisdom) play a crucial role in fostering responsible population awareness. Furthermore, the principles of khalifah fil ardh (human stewardship on earth) and maqashid al-shariah provide a strong theological foundation for guiding individual decision-making, particularly in matters of reproduction and consumption, toward sustainability. This study contributes by proposing a holistic framework for integrating overpopulation issues into the PAI curriculum. Such integration enables Islamic Religious Education to move beyond ritualistic instruction and function as a transformative space for cultivating individuals who are ethically grounded, socially responsible, and environmentally conscious.
