AI-Assisted Qur’anic Learning in Pesantren: Innovation in Tajwid, Tahfiz

Abstrak

The growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Qur’anic education presents new possibilities for enhancing traditional learning practices in pesantren. This study aims to review and synthesize existing research on the use of AI in Qur’anic learning, with particular attention to its applications in tajwid and tahfiz, its contribution to learning processes and outcomes, and the pedagogical challenges of its implementation within the pesantren context. A narrative literature review was conducted through searches of Google Scholar, Scopus, and ScienceDirect for studies published between 2019 and 2026. The review included peer-reviewed studies available in full text, published in Indonesian or English, and addressing AI-assisted learning, Qur’anic education, tajwid, tahfiz, Qur’anic recitation, pronunciation, memorization, or related pedagogical processes. Non-academic publications, duplicate records, inaccessible full-text studies, research focusing solely on general AI applications, and digital Qur’anic resources without a learning component were excluded. The selected literature was analyzed thematically to identify patterns in AI applications, pedagogical functions, reported learning outcomes, implementation challenges, and the role of teachers. The findings indicate that AI-supported technologies, particularly speech recognition, pronunciation analysis, adaptive learning, and digital memorization systems, can facilitate individualized practice, immediate feedback, repetition, and progress monitoring. Nevertheless, AI raises concerns regarding pedagogical supervision, technological limitations, and the preservation of teacher authority and the spiritual dimensions of Qur’anic learning. AI should therefore be positioned as a complementary pedagogical resource that strengthens, rather than replaces, the traditional role of kyai and ustadz in pesantren.
