Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, has created new opportunities for teacher professional development and instructional innovation. However, the integration of AI into Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI) requires more than technological skills because PAI teachers are also responsible for transmitting religious knowledge, moral values, and Islamic character. This study aims to analyze the role of AI in the professional development of PAI teachers in elementary schools in Batang District, Central Java, Indonesia, and to formulate a contextual framework for responsible AI integration. The study employs a qualitative approach using literature-based analysis and contextual interpretation of current research on AI, teacher professional development, AI literacy, and Islamic education. The analysis focuses on five dimensions: AI literacy, instructional planning, development of teaching materials and assessment, reflective professional learning, and ethical-religious verification. The findings indicate that AI can support PAI teachers in developing teaching materials, lesson plans, differentiated learning activities, assessment instruments, reflective practices, and professional learning resources. Nevertheless, effective integration requires teachers to maintain human agency, verify religious content, protect student data, prevent academic dishonesty, and critically evaluate AI-generated information. The study proposes a five-dimensional framework for PAI teacher development: AI literacy, pedagogical integration, Islamic content verification, ethical responsibility, and continuous professional learning. The framework emphasizes that AI should function as a professional assistant rather than a substitute for teachers. The study provides contextual implications for teacher training, school leadership, and professional learning communities in Batang District.
