Abstract

Sustainable development places poverty alleviation as the main agenda for achieving equitable social welfare. In this context, zakat and waqf play a role as sharia economic instruments that have the capacity to strengthen welfare distribution and encourage economic independence among vulnerable groups. This study aims to examine the contribution of zakat and waqf to sustainable development, especially in efforts to reduce poverty. The research approach was conducted through a qualitative method based on a literature review by examining scientific publications, official reports, and policies related to the management of zakat and waqf. The findings show that zakat can provide significant support to mustahik through consumptive and productive programs, especially through UMKM empowerment and skills improvement schemes. Productive waqf also has an important impact through asset management that supports social services, education, health, and community-based economic development. The integration of zakat and waqf in the framework of Islamic social finance shows great potential for creating more sustainable poverty alleviation, provided it is supported by professional and transparent governance. These findings confirm that optimal management of zakat and waqf can serve as a strategic foundation for achieving sustainable development goals, particularly SDG 1 on poverty eradication.
